Art Therapy

Emma is a Masters Qualified, ANZACATA registered professional creative arts therapist, offering personal inquiry sessions for individuals and groups.

Using adaptive processes that are person centred, emergent, expressive and that encourage explorative curiosity in a safely held and confidential personal inquiry container.

The creative therapies I offer support a range of needs from life change, decision making, uncertainty, anxiety, patterns and habit forming or breaking, to navigating grief, loss and the complexities of trauma and other psychopathologies.

I practise as a multimodal/creative/expressive therapist, this means that I value, welcome and encourage the many modes (or forms) of creative expression. I work collaboratively alongside you to support your noticing and reflection of what feels right for you.

You are the inquirer and I your companion, you (the inquirer) are the leader in our inquiry.

I work intuitively and with an emphasis on curiosity, experimentation, embodied sensing and noticing patterns.

Together we will make observations and explore what is known and what we want to know more about.

Trusting your own lived experience as a guide for embodied knowing, we can identify values, set goals, create expressions and move toward possibilities for meaning.

I am committed to maintaining a practice that is always accessible, to all bodies; ages, cultures, religions, socio economic status and genders. I hold a professional and ethically safe space, one that guards and serves our inquiry with respect and compassion. I move toward our work together from a place of equity and with a willingness to meet you where you are, at each meeting, in each moment.

I have experience working with high need disability, carers/support people are able to be present by discussion.

More on the Creative/Expressive/Art Therapies;

Through the creative process, we can gain insight into our thoughts, beliefs, needs, intentions and experiences, enabling self reflection and greater self-awareness.

Self confidence and anxiety: Engaging in art-making encourages us to be present to what is there, in front of us rather than being tied to a past or future imagining. Whether the art making is slow or it generates a lot of movement the process can create a mindful quality of presence, bringing us closer to what is important.

Art making can also be extremly enjoyable, calming, reducing stress and anxiety, supporting resilience, increasing problem-solving abilities and can help individuals develop adaptive coping strategies.

Participants have control over the mode and materials they use in their inquiry to express , strengthening a sense of control over self and choice. Having space held with purpose, to explore freely, to be seen as a creator and to reflect and receive feedback on your work is contributes to a greater sense of self and personal empowerment. Creating enhances communication skills, particularly for those who might find it challenging to express themselves verbally expressing and processing emotions that may be difficult to put into words. It can improve social interactions, connections and facilitate the development of healthy relationships.

The benefits of art therapy will vary for each individual, and the effectiveness of the session is dependant factors such as the therapeutic relationship, the individual’s engagement and willingness to be present and the specificity of the goals and expectations of the session.
